Microsoft Outlook/Outllook Express

Support: Email: Configuring MS Outlook and Outlook Express

Instructions for configuring Microsoft Outlook Express 5.0+ and Microsoft Office Outlook 2000+ are provided below for regular SMTP/POP3 and SSL. Before configuring SSL, you should do the basic SMTP/POP configuration and test your settings by attempting to send an email.

Configuring Outlook and Outlook Express for SMTP/POP

SSL Setup for Outlook Express

First, you must setup Outlook or Outlook Express as a standard SMTP/POP client for Cotse email. For Outlook 2000 and Outlook Express versions earlier than 2003:

  • Open Outlook Express.
  • Click Tools ---> Accounts ---> Mail ---> Add a New Email Account ---> Mail
  • Enter in the name you wish to use with the account. Click Next
  • Enter in the email address you wish to use with the account. Click Next
  • Your incoming mail server is POP3
  • Your Pop Server is: mail.cotse.net
  • Your SMTP Server is: www.cotse.net.Click Next
  • Enter your Cotse account name. You can enter you Cotse password or leave it blank so that you are prompted each time you first connect to mail during a session.Click Next
  • Choose your connection type. Click Next
  • Click Finish.

You should now be configured to use Outlook Express with Cotse SMTP/POP email.

Continue on to the SSL setup portion if you wish to use SSL POP/SMTP.

To configure Outlook Express 2003 for SMTP/POP:

  • Open Outlook Express.
  • Click Tools ---> Email Accounts ---> Add a New Email Account. Click Next
  • For Server Type, select POP3. Click Next
  • In the Internet Email Settings (POP3) tab:
    • enter the name and email address you wish to use for your outgoing mail in "User Information"
    • enter your Cotse username and Cotse password in "Logon Information"
    • "Incoming Mail Server (POP3):" mail.cotse.net
    • "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):" www.cotse.net
    • "Logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA):" unchecked.
  • Click on the "More Settings" button
  • Click on the "Outgoing Server" tab and select "My Outgoing Server (SMTP) Requires Authentication"
  • Select "Logon Using" and enter your username and password
  • Click on the "Connections" tab and select your connection type
  • Click OK
  • If you wish to test your account settings, click the "test account settings button." Otherwise, just click Next
  • Click Finish.

Continue on to the SSL setup portion if you wish to use SSL POP/SMTP.

Once you have configured SMTP/POP, use the instructions below to setup SSL for Outlook Express:

  • On the "Tools" menu, select "Accounts..."
  • Highlight the COTSE mail account, and click "Properties" (or "Edit existing accounts" for Outlook Express 2003)
  • Click on the "Servers" tab:
    - incoming mail server: mail.cotse.net
    - outgoing mail server: www.cotse.net
    - Logon using Secure Password - Authentication: unchecked
    - outgoing server requires authentication: checked
  • Click on "Settings" and verify that it's using "use receive user/pass".
  • Click on the "Advanced" Tab
    - Check "Requires encrypted connection (SSL) for Outgoing Server (SMTP)
    - Outgoing (SMTP): Port 25
    - Check "Requires encrypted connection (SSL) for Incoming Server (POP3)
    - Incoming (POP3) Mail: Port 995
  • Click OK

KNOWN ISSUES:

Outlook's "test" button does not always yield accurate results, so if you test and the test fails, try sending an actual email and see if that works.

If you get a warning that Outlook Express cannot verify the authenticity of our server's key, click "yes'" to continue using the server.

Newer versions of OE will not allow you to permanently remember the certificate and you will need to re-authorize the certificate EACH time you start OE and send/receive mail. 

If your ISP blocks port 25 for smtp, try using port 465 in your configuration.

Other Common Problems:

Make sure that Logon Using Secure Password Authentication is unchecked

If you continue to have trouble sending email, try turning off any firewall or antivirus software temporarily. Try to send email. If it sends, then you need to reconfigure your AV or firewall.

Troubleshooting "Relay Access Denied"

Troubleshooting: Socket Error: 10060

If you are getting a "Relay Access Denied" message such as:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'your_account@cotse.net'. Subject '', Account: 'your_account', Server: 'www.cotse.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 : Recipient address rejected: Relay access denied', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

The important phrase in the error message is "Recipient address rejected: Relay access denied". The problem is that our server requires authentication and it isn't enabled. If you are using the Cotse.Net STMP server, you can fix this by reviewing the instructions on this page to make sure you have enabled our specific authentication method.

When trying to send an email, if you get an error of the form:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'your_account', Server: 'www.cotse.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

The important phrase in the error message is "The connection to the server has failed" or "Socket Error". This means that your ISP is probably blocking the SMTP port. We allow SMTP connections on two alternate ports to work around this problem. Go to the 'Tools' menu and select 'Accounts'. Then select your Cotse.Net account from the list and click 'Properties'. Move to the tab named 'Advanced' and change your SMTP port from 25 to 587 (if you're using non-ssl) or port 465 (if you're using SSL) to work around your ISP's block in this case.
